From Old to New: Conventional Toilet to Dual-Flush
Make that toilet stop using up all that water. Convert your conventional toilet to a dual-flush toilet! It's easy, it's not expensive, and it saves you money!
A couple of months ago, my husband and I were day dreaming about remodeling our upstairs bathroom after we save up our pennies and find that elusive free time that I’m sure will show up any day now.
As part of the remodel, we knew we wanted to replace our conventional toilet with a dual flush model. Dual-flush toilets have one flushing option for liquid and paper and another option for…ahem…the other stuff. The lighter flush generally uses about 50% less water, which adds up to a lot of water savings in a year. However, they cost $300-500 - too pricy for our remodel.
However, while researching prices on Amazon.com, we discovered a DIY product that can convert a regular toilet into a dual flush toilet. Even better, the price was $21.49! It seemed too good to be true, but we decided to give it a try.
My moderately handy husband installed the HydroRight Drop-in Dual Flush Converter in about 10 minutes, then spent another 5 minutes adjusting the flush.
The buttons have easy-to-follow graphics, so our 5 and 8-year-old kids were quickly able to understand when to use each button appropriately. Also, they absolutely delight in explaining under what circumstances to use each flush to every one who comes in to our house. At what age will they outgrow potty humor? 12? 18? 38?
After two months of use, we have no complaints and have installed another one in the downstairs bathroom. We ordered ours on Amazon.com, but I have also seen it at Home Depot and Ace Hardware.
Happy Flushing!
