SEPTEMBER NEWS
Greenwood / Ballard CoolMoms led by Tara Broyhill volunteered at the Festival of Fruit at Carkeek Park on September 19, 2009. CoolMoms helped kids make all sorts of apple and harvest crafts to celebrate the bounty of local fruit from Piper's Orchard in the park. Crafts were simple and incredibly low impact -- think apple prints and corn husk dolls. Festival goers got to sample pies and cider from local apples, see hives of local bees, and learn about growing fruit in our area.

JULY NEWS
Thanks to all who attended our Canning Class taught by Jessica Dally our local Master Canner at the Greenwood Senior Center July 16th. We had a great turn out and many who attended followed up to let us know how valuable and educational this class was to them. The Greenwood/Ballard Coolmom group has wrapped up our 3 month series on local food with the completion of this class; below is a quote from a local mom: "I'm so impressed with the instructor Jessica and how well she explained both some complicated and simple canning instructions. I'm now both inspired and feel superbly educated to start canning safely!"
Overview
GreenWood CoolMoms have been focused on local food this Spring 2009 with a talk about urban gardening from our own master gardener, Karen Schneider, and a talk with PCC Farmland Trust about ways to help preserve local farmland. We will be taking the month of August off to enjoy the sun!
Meeting Focus
Thurs, May 21st 7:00 pm Ballard Senior Center -How to create a backyard
garden in an urban setting. Are you interested in eating more fresh,
organically grown vegetables? Would you like to have a secure,
sustainable food source in your backyard? Have you always wanted to
have a garden, but don’t feel you have the time or know-how to get
started? If so, you will want to come to our next meeting; we are
inviting guest speakers to talk about services and the best way to
accomplish these interests!!
Thurs, June 18th 7:00 pm Greenwood Senior Center - PCC Farm Trust – PCC
Farmland Trust secures, preserves and stewards threatened farmland in
the Northwest, to ensure that generations of local farmers productively
farm it using sustainable, organic growing methods. The Trust takes its
mission one step further than most land trusts by working to place
farmers on the property, actively producing food for the local
community.
Thurs, July 16th 7:00 pm Greenwood Senior Center - Home Canning/Preserving
We have arranged for Jessica Dally to come to the Greenwood Senior
Center to teach our Greenwood/Ballard Coolmom’s, their Friends, Family
and Neighbors how to can and preserve food in a safe manner. Our Goals
is to bring those interested in home canning and food preserving
together, to add value, unite against climate change and do small
sustainable projects together.
Jessica is a Master Canner/Food Preserver and in this class she will be
teaching about food safety, water bath canning and pressure canning and
when you would use either method. Canning can be dangerous so come
learn how to preserve your harvest safely!
We are opening this activity up to all Coolmom’s broadly in Seattle, their friends and family.
