CoolMom Coordinator Bios
Bainbridge Coordinator - Sonja Fritts sfritts@seanet.com
Sonja has lived on Bainbridge Island since 2002 and loves the strong community connection with the environment. She and her husband Mike have three children, Kieran (5), Ingrid (3) and Elsa (2). Although she has lived abroad and all over Washington State and the East Coast, she has always considered Seattle home since her grandparents first settled in Ballard.
Sonja’s interest in and concern for the environment began years ago but intensified after her children were born. Sonja is an attorney and practiced labor and employment law for nine years before stopping in 2005 when her second child was born. This allowed her more time to educate herself about sustainability and climate change. After watching documentary films such as “The End of Suburbia,” “A Crude Awakening,” and “Who Killed the Electric Car?,” and reading books such as “The Omnivore’s Dilemma,” and “Square Foot Gardening,” Sonja has lead her group to take action in their community and has strong connections to the Bainbridge Community.
Greenwood Coordinator - Carrie Barnes, Carrieb2008@gmail.com
Carrie Barnes is the mother of two joyful and energetic children. As a block captain
in Greenwood, Carrie found the need to organize, coordinate and evangelize the
importance of communities working together to be a part of the solution to fight
climate change. While looking for ideas around what moms, friends and neighbors can do to come together as a sustainable group; she discovered Coolmom.org! A deep
personal passion to become active in the effort to combat climate change developed
after the arrival of her children, and with this passion, a growing desire to leave
them with a planet worth inheriting. Carrie's favorite quote is:
"Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful committed citizens can change the world..... Indeed it's the only thing that ever has" ~ Margaret Mead, American Anthropolist
Greenwood Coordinator - Brooke Doyle, BrookeDoyle@yahoo.com
Brooke has been a Greenwood resident since 2002 and loves the sense of community here. Ever since hearing a lecture about the "3000 mile Caesar salad" in England in 1996, she has been trying to figure out ways to live a more sustainable lifestyle. The addition of Meghan, 3, and Brendan, 20 months, to her life has heightened her desire to be more green. She met Greenwood co-coordinator Carrie Barnes when their youngest children were newborns, and Carrie's passion and enthusiasm encouraged her to figure out a way to take collective action. Brooke is excited to find like-minded moms in the 'hood to help figure out ways to raise good eco-citizens.

Yakima Coordinator - Elise Wakefield Cardenas, zenmom76@live.com
Elise was originally a Seattle-ite. She grew up in the View Ridge area just East of the UW campus.
She made her way East by way of Ellensburg where she received her BA at CWU in '99 and moved to Yakima with her [now] husband who grew up in Sunnyside. Now that she is a mother she has noticed how her personal experience growing up in Seattle has shaped her thinking in regards to taking care of our planet. Yakima has curbside recycling for those who request it, but she feels there is so much potential for greener living with education and changing lifestyles one household at a time! She has two busy boys ages 3 and 16mos. She is a stay at home and teaches water aerobics part time.
