Save the Planet - On the Move

Drive Less - It's healthy for the planet and your family!

Our partner, SeattleCAN.org, will help you Give Your Car the Summer Off!

Bike or walk whenever possible.  The only fuel you will burn is calories.  Say hello to your pre-baby jeans!

Can't bike because....?  Well, take a look at these photos of cyclists in Holland and get inspired!  Some forgot their helmets, please wear yours!

Teach your kids every excursion does not begin in the car.  Educating our kids is a big part of the long term solution.

Start a Walking School Bus, a group of children walking to school with one or more adults.

Live close to work.  If both parents work, try to live where you can minimize your commuting emissions.

Is your neighborhood walkable?  Rate your neighborhood here!

Share!  We tell our kids to do it and we should too.  Carpool or try car sharing.  Many cities offer Flexcar or Zipcar programs, which provide access to a car.  Membership fees cover gas, maintenance and insurance.

You can use a great online service like GoLoco.org to find ride shares.

Switch to the dentists and doctors whose offices are closest to your home.

No time to walk one child to preschool and another to grade school?  Speed things up with a bike.  Try a bike trailer or an afterburner bike attachment for older kids.

Running errands and need space for kids and stuff:  use a Dutch style cargo bike

A bus or train ride is a great adventure to kids - use mass transit!

If your community doesn't offer mass transit, reduce your driving with carpools and minimize unnecessary car trips.

Reduce unnecessary car trips.  Pick a few recipes and grocery shop once a week, not every day.

Live close to school and support the schools close to your home.

When it is time for a new car, buy the most fuel efficient car you can.

Own a hybrid car.

Maintain your car for greater fuel efficiency:  inflate tires regularly and change or clean air filters.

Start a friendly competition in your community:  a bike to work or school challenge!  Calculate miles biked per school or business and add them up to find a winner.

Support construction of safe walking and biking paths for you and your kids.

Inflate car tires regularly for better gas mileage.

Change your car air filter monthly.  You could save 800lbs of carbon dioxide and $130 per year! (Source: Stopglobalwarming.org)

When driving, slow down, don't race your engine and avoid idling.  This will save you gas - and money!

Inefficient SUVs, minivans and pickup trucks churn out a lot of carbon dioxide.  Guarantee a better quality of life for your kids by choosing a more fuel efficient car.
